Remembering the Small Things

Today I was waiting in line at Kohls, purchasing some work shoes for my new job. I was casually watching the cashier beep the purchases of the person in front of me until an elder woman smiled and said, "Today was a good day."

I turned around, not knowing how to respond but simply smiled and agreed with a silent nod. She then continued to tell me how she hasn't seen many days like this since she's been out of the hospital and that she had enjoyed shopped for a rug for her bathroom. With a quick glance at her shopping cart, I realized she had only one item-that small purple, fuzzy rug. I then continued to tell her how pretty the color was.

She smiled and nodded, agreeing on the color before remarking on the weather, a topic mostly used between strangers. She simply said, "I'm glad its not raining. I used to like the rain when I was young but now the rain just makes me lonely and sad." By this time, the person in front me of was almost done being checked out, so I wished her a wonderful rest of the day, and she smiled and said, "Kindness is the language which the deaf can hear and the blind can see. Mr. Twain said that, and I believe it. Thank you."

This elderly woman, who was bent over her cart and had slight trouble with her speech had shown me the power of enjoying the small things in life, whether it is my boyfriend lending me his labtop so I can get homework done, or my ballet friends giving me a hug simply because they understand whatever emotion I am going through.

Don't forget to remember the small things in life. <3
